Top 8 Facts About Skin Cancer
by. Dolvin ≈ September 27, 2008 |
Skin cancer is on the rise and is developing in younger people. The good thing is that many cases of skin cancer are preventable. All it takes is a being sun savvy and educated on our parts to prevent the disease.
These skin cancer facts are jaw dropping. It really shows how skin cancer can affect us all, directly or indirectly.
1. More than 90% of skin cancer is caused by sun exposure. The UV rays of the sun are responsible for non-melanoma skin cancers. Unprotected exposure to these rays can be from being outdoors, tanning booths, and even through your car or home windows.
2. Each hour, 1 person dies from skin cancer. About 2,800 people will die of non-melanoma skin cancer and about 8,000 will die of melanoma in the U.S. this year. The sad thing is that many of these deaths could have been prevented by simply protecting ones self from the sun.
3. Skin cancer accounts for more than 50% of all cancers combined. Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer among men and women.
4. More than one million cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed this year. The American Cancer Society estimates that 1.5 million cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed this year.
5. Skin cancer is most deadly for African Americans, Asians, and Latinos. Although the risk factor is rather low for African Americans, Asians, and Latinos, skin cancer can be the most deadly for these groups.
6. 1 in 3 Caucasians will be diagnosed with skin cancer sometime in their life. 1 in 5 Americans will be diagnosed in their lifetime with skin cancer. The risk factor is higher for Caucasians, with it being in 1 in 3.
7. One bad burn in childhood doubles the risk factor for melanoma later in life. Protecting children against UV exposure is essential for skin health into adulthood. A blistering sun burn during childhood increases the risk of melanoma as an adult. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer.
8. Men are diagnosed with skin cancer more often than women. According to the American Cancer Society, men are twice as likely to develop skin cancer over women. In fact, it is more common than prostate cancer, lung cancer, and colon cancer in men over 50. This makes skin cancer the most common cancer in men over 50.
so, let's take care our skin... source: http://cancer.about.com

Butterfly Effect
by. Dolvin ≈ September 23, 2008 |
do you ever watch "The Butterfly Effect" cast by Ashton Kutcher? that can change his past but effected his future and its not as his expected to be... (I like that movie..)
Hmm.. in Heroes that I watch today (Heroes Season 3 has beed released.. yipiii... ^^) this sentence is show up again.. as its subtitle.. hmm.. what is Butterfly effect?
Butterfly effect is the phenomenon whereby a small change at one place in a complex system can have large effects elsewhere, e.g., a butterfly flapping its wings in Rio de Janeiro might change the weather in Chicago. hmm.. how can it be?
here is the theory that I got from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterfly_effect
The phrase refers to the idea that a butterfly's wings might create tiny changes in the atmosphere that may ultimately alter the path of a tornado or delay, accelerate or even prevent the occurrence of a tornado in a certain location. The flapping wing represents a small change in the initial condition of the system, which causes a chain of events leading to large-scale alterations of events. Had the butterfly not flapped its wings, the trajectory of the system might have been vastly different. Of course the butterfly cannot literally cause a tornado. The kinetic energy in a tornado is enormously larger than the energy in the turbulence of a butterfly. The kinetic energy of a tornado is ultimately provided by the sun and the butterfly can only influence certain details of weather events in a chaotic manner.
Recurrence, the approximate return of a system towards its initial conditions, together with sensitive dependence on initial conditions are the two main ingredients for chaotic motion. They have the practical consequence of making complex systems, such as the weather, difficult to predict past a certain time range (approximately a week in the case of weather).
In human behavior, one can certainly see how small changes could render behavior, or another complex system, extremely unpredictable. Small actions or experiences stored in the unconscious mind, could certainly affect a person’s behavior in unexpected ways.
One looks at teen suicide for example, where no instance of previous depression has occurred. Loved ones are often left wondering what the many small factors were that precipitated a suicide. Further, people often agonize about the small details they did not see as possible factors for an unexpected suicide.
However, there are plenty of ways that such a behavior would be unanswerable according to the butterfly effect. Minute actions and experiences dating from childhood stored in the unconscious mind are not accessible when a person has died, and they may be hard to access without hypnosis or therapy when a person is living.
Whether used in science, fiction, or social sciences, the butterfly effect remains theory. However, it does seem a reasonable explanation for the unpredictability of events. As it relates to human behavior, it does suggest that even the smallest actions may have huge consequences for good or ill.

Life is Like a Pencil
by. Dolvin ≈ September 22, 2008 |
There's nothing like writing with a newly sharpened pencil. It has a nice fine point, plenty of lead to work with, and what you write is very legible.
If you happen to go too long without sharpening your pencil, the lead gets dull, wide, and soon, you're rubbing wood on your paper.
So what do you do? In order to sharpen your pencil, you need to cut away the wood to expose the lead. Then you need to cut the lead in order to get it to a point. The pencil works best at it's sharpest.
There's also a trick to sharpening properly. Not everyone can do it correctly. Often people end up with broken leads and broken pencils.
Let's move to the application:
- Regular pencils need regular sharpening. I'm talking about your basic, yellow-painted, #2 pencil. It needs to be sharpened in order for it too work properly, even from the beginning. So do you. You need to take time to sharpen your skills, sharpen your thinking, sharpen your attitude on a regular basis.
- The best sharpening occurs through cutting something away. With a pencil, you need to cut away the wood in order to get to the lead. In our lives, sharpening isn't always about learning something new. It is much more about taking away the distractions that get in the way of what we already know to be true.
- Sharpening is only necessary when you use what you've sharpened. You don't need to sharpen an unused pencil, unless you're going to use it. Sharpening is necessary because of use. If all you do is spend your time sharpening, then you may actually be wasting your resources.
- A sharpened pencil still has an eraser on it. Even a perfectly sharpened pencil can make a mistake. It all depends on who's doing the writing. Just because you sharpen your skills, it doesn't mean that you're going to be perfect. All you're doing is putting yourself in a position to be the best you can be. If you make a mistake, you might simply need to flip things around and start over.
- Sharpened pencils open the door to greater creativity. An unsharpened pencil is difficult to work with and creates more of a distraction to the process. Once a pencil is sharpened, it becomes a tool in the hands of a person and is bound only by the person's creativity. When we sharpen our lives, we open the door to greater possibilities. When we take our skills to the next level, we become aware of greater opportunities.
- Unsharpened pencils soon become dull and unusable. Have you ever rumaged through a drawer or container of pencils, trying to find the right one? What are you looking for? You're looking for the sharpest, the one that will write the best. All the dull pencils become useless, overlooked, obsolete. Have you ever felt useless, overlooked, or obsolete?
This metaphor works with pencils, saws, knives, basically anything that requires sharpening. It also works with people who want to remain at the top of their game and continue learning and growing and developing and remaining relevant.
